Many guests ask what prompted us to open a bed and breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake. When I lived in Montréal, we would often travel down to the seaside in Kennebunk, Maine, where I stayed at bed and breakfasts. The idea of owning and operating a bed and breakfast resonated with me. That was 1977–80. In 1980, I transferred with Air Canada from Montréal to Toronto and visited Niagara-on-the-Lake in the summer of 1981. As I drove past the gorgeous estates along the beautiful Niagara Parkway between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, I remember thinking, ‘I could live here.’ Fast-forward to 1999. I was sailing the Mediterranean on board a tall ship when I met Fernando. Over the following months, we kept in touch and, in December 1999, he decided to visit Canada. He never left. For two years, Fernando worked at various hotels and restaurants in Toronto however he was less than enthralled with the lack of professionalism and poor service he witnessed on a daily basis. That’s when the idea struck me. Let’s open a bed and breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It took us a year to find the home we wanted to convert to a bed and breakfast. The name “Globetrotters” was a natural. Not only had we travelled extensively, guests from around the world would be travelling to our doorstep. We love what we do, and our guests tell us it shows.
