Many guests ask what prompted us to open a bed and breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake. When Donna lived in Montréal, she would often travel down to the seaside in Kennebunk, Maine, where she stayed at bed and breakfasts. The idea of owning and operating a bed and breakfast resonated with her. That was 1977–80.
In 1980, Donna transferred with Air Canada from Montréal to Toronto and visited Niagara-on-the-Lake in the summer of 1981. As she drove past the gorgeous estates along the beautiful Niagara Parkway between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, she remembers thinking, “I could live here.”
Fast-forward to 1999. She was sailing the Mediterranean on board a tall ship when she met Fernando. Over the following months, they kept in touch and, in December 1999, he decided to visit Canada. He never left. For two years, Fernando worked at various hotels and restaurants in Toronto however he was never enthralled with the lack of professionalism and poor service he witnessed on a daily basis.
That’s when the idea struck Donna, “Let’s open a bed and breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake.” It took them a couple of years to find the home they wanted to convert into a bed and breakfast. The name “Globetrotters” was a natural. Not only had they travelled extensively, guests from around the world would be travelling to their doorstep.
