The Story Behind Globetrotters B&B

“Wonderful hospitality, engaging conversation and decadent food.”

What prompted us to open a bed and breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

When Donna lived in Montréal, she often travelled to the seaside in Kennebunk, Maine, where she stayed at bed and breakfasts. On some level, the idea of owning and operating one resonated with her. That was 1977–80.

In Summer 1981, Donna visited Niagara-on-the-Lake. As she drove past the gorgeous estates along the beautiful Niagara Parkway between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, she remembers thinking, “I could live here.”

Meanwhile, Fernando was gaining his expertise in the hospitality industry at various hotels throughout Europe and as the Food & Beverage Officer on board Princess Cruises.

Fast-forward to Summer 1999. Fernando and Donna met on board a Star Clipper ship while cruising the Mediterranean. They kept in touch, and, in December 1999, he decided to visit Canada. He never left. For two years, Fernando worked at various hotels and restaurants in Toronto however he was frustrated with the lack of professionalism and poor service he witnessed daily.

That’s when the idea struck Donna, “Let’s open a bed and breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake.”

It took a couple of years to find the home we wanted to convert into a bed and breakfast. The name “Globetrotters” was a natural. Not only had we travelled extensively, but guests from around the world would be travelling to our doorstep.

And the rest is history…
